Spanish Students Attend Los Soles Truncos

Spanish students enjoyed the play Los Soles Truncos (The Maimed Suns) on September 30, 2023.  They also had an opportunity to talk to the actresses.

Los Soles Truncos is a play by Puerto Rican playwright and novelist René Marqués. It was first published in 1958 and is considered one of his most important works. The play tells the story of three sisters belonging to the upper social class in Puerto Rico who live in a decaying mansion in San Juan, Puerto Rico, during the 1940s. They lose their parents, social position, material goods, and money and lock themselves in the house they left on Cristo Street in Old San Juan. The themes of love, jealousy, time (as a vision of change, impotence, and aging), and the American invasion of Puerto Rico are present in the play, as well as a comparison with the Spanish invasion.

The play was presented by LatinUs, the only Spanish-speaking theater company in Ohio. Their blackbox is located in the cultural district of Cleveland, and they offer classical Spanish theater with English supertitles.
