Experiential Cross-Cultural Service Learning: Thailand Animal Welfare
LING 340
Led by Dr. Ching-Hsuan Wu

This international service-learning course immerses students in community engagement across global settings. In Spring 2026, participants will travel to Chiang Mai, Thailand, with a central focus on animal welfare. While proficiency in the local language is not required, students will develop Thai language skills throughout the program. Designed for learners eager to gain insight through hands-on experiences in diverse cultural contexts, the course begins with seminar-style sessions held on campus during the semester. Following finals week, students transition to service work on-site in Thailand. Through experiential education, academic instruction is integrated with civic responsibility to address community-identified needs. Service activities include volunteering at an elephant sanctuary, assisting in dog and cat foster care, supporting an under-resourced school, and helping local community activities. Core to this course are student engagement with the local community and reflective practice concerning overseas service. Cultural immersion is a key dimension of the program, enriching students’ cultural sensitivity and awareness, and deepening their understanding of the motivations and impact of their community service. Through active service, critical reflection, and meaningful cross-cultural interaction, students will cultivate the ability to act as engaged citizens with global societal responsibilities. As part of this transformative experience, they will distribute educational resources, promote social good, and channel their Case education into tangible social impact beyond the campus.
