On November 30, 2023, CWRU students, faculty, and visitors enjoyed a talk given by author and food historian Sarah Lohman at Guilford House.
Lohman’s second book, Endangered Eating: America’s Vanishing Foods (Norton, 2023) is currently a New York Times Editors’ Choice as well as Amazon Editors’ Best Books of 2023. On November 30, the book was nominated for the 2023 James Beard Foundation Book Award.
Lohman’s first book was Eight Flavors: The Untold Story of American Cuisine (Simon & Schuster, 2016). Her work has been featured in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, and the Washington Post.
The talk was co-sponsored by CWRU Slow Food on Campus and Slow Food Cleveland. Lunch from Bon Appetit was provided by Slow Food Cleveland. Author Lohman spoke about the book, current issues with food conservation, and other matters of political focus, social justice and food justice, and sustainability concerns. Following this, Lohman also gave an author talk at Loganberry Books in Shaker Heights before returning to Las Vegas.
Mary Holmes, current leader of Slow Food Cleveland, gave introductory remarks. DMLL faculty who attended, Jacqueline Nanfito (Spanish) and Denise Caterinacci, faculty advisor to Slow Food on Campus at CWRU (Italian), have taught semester-length special topics courses on the Slow Food Movement.
